Proposal of a Water Polo Schools Super League & SWOT analysis by Marius Buys (19/4/2009)
PROPOSAL
To establish a Televised Amateur Schools Super League for the top water polo playing schools in each province that is funded through sponsorship.
FORMAT
The clashes would be best suited to individual playoffs by each school in their normal fixture list within each province from where the top teams would then meet in a series televised tournaments to determine the eventual winners of the league.
BRANDING, MARKETING & PACKAGING
Branding (Direct & Peripheral): The sponsors logo can be displayed in a highly visible manner such as on the players caps; referees & coaches shirts; goals; pool bottom; ball; shot clocks; benches; pop up banners; heart banners; flags; A Frame banners; post match interview wall; pennants and on the lane ropes.
Marketing: Marketing can be done either directly to the persons attending the tournament or via inserts or advertising.
Packaging is highly organic and could be done to suit the corporate image or needs of the sponsor such as interviews with players coaches and spectators, inserts on individuals or noteworthy development.
STRENGTHS
1) The direct target community consists of members who are of the sphere of the SA business community that constitute key role players in the countries economy as the sport is played in elite, LSM (Living Standard Measurement) 8 -10, schools as well as a strong emergence of the sport in developing communities. (“elite” schools cater for the full racial affluent section of the Country)
2) Water Polo is generally under- or self funded without having any brands attached to the sport as an anchor sponsorship as is the case with, for example, rugby and Coca Cola and swimming and Telkom.
3) Water Polo is the fastest growing female school sport in the country.
4) Schools can operate independently from their provincial governing bodies in terms of sponsorship signing.
5) Water Polo is one of the largest “Cinderella” codes of sport with over 6000 active school participants in the sport at any given time.
6) The traditional water polo season stretches over a longer period than most sports namely September to March. (A total of 6 months)
7) There is a bona fide hunger in the Water Polo community for the recognition of their sport via broadcasting and sponsorship.
8) The sport is fast paced and contained, which lends itself to good action photography.
9) Participant schools have generally good sport and general administration and can be relied upon to fulfill any criteria or responsibilities as requested by a festival organizing body.
10) Participant schools are adept at the timorous transport of its athletes to sporting venues.
11) Participant schools are adept at the uniform appearance of their athletes especially at first team level where he athletes are subject to hero worship from aspirant players.
12) Participant schools can be relied upon to not bring the sport or sponsor into disrepute due to good control measures being in place.
13) The type of television shot used is ideal for the positioning of branding and advertising material.
14) Participant schools will not act in a prescriptive manner, as there is a long list of schools who want to participate in the proposed events.
15) The exposure of the brand sits much deeper than the participants who are directly involved in the festival - the support pyramid consists of players and coaches at the apex , the friends, parents, teachers, players and aspirant players in the mid section and loyal past graduates of the participant schools.
16) A full professional production crew is in place with 2 underwater cameras, and an 8 HD camera OB unit for live events as well an experienced Water Polo Event Production crew who operate off 4 cameras and 1 under water camera.
17) 2 experienced bilingual commentators are available.
18) The sport is not affected by inclement weather and only lightning can delay filming or live broadcasts.
WEAKNESSES
1) The coordination of the festivals would need to involve knowledgeable persons who have previously hosted water polo festivals which would need to be sourced and remunerated.
2) If the event is geared towards pre-packaging it is dependant on good weather and a fallback venue, a plan would need to be in place in case of said.
3) Initial setup cost and purchase of equipment would affect the first year’s budget before it could be reused for the hosting of the events in the following years.
OPPORTUNTIES
1) The “adoption” of water polo by a major sponsor would significantly impact on the decision making process by the participant members who are in the age bracket when they would choose which brand to support in the long term. Brand loyalty comes at a rather inexpensive price to establish the sponsor their personal brand of choice.
2) In the macro scenario, the Sponsor would be seen as the savior of a sport that has for too long been treated below its potential. The effect of the above action would be far reaching in the role players of the water polo community and brand transfer is a definite possibility.
3) A vacuum exists in the absence of brand support for the sport, which, if filled, will affect significantly in the gratitude and recognition by a community that is starved and hungry for any form of recognition of the sport. A significant opportunity exists, because of where water polo is currently positioned, to establish the image and perception of the larger SA public that the sponsor has rescued the sport form “zero status” and propelled it into a fully-fledged, recognized and visibly celebrated sporting code.
4) The event can be structured off an organic base and has the potential for sponsor dictated growth.
5) The facility and venue lends itself to the erection of points of sale that will allow the on the ground activation of the brand.
6) There is a need for good, family driven, programme material with the advent of new emerging broadcasters.
7) The sport can easily be upgraded to previously unprecedented level because of previous lack of funding that will directly be ascribed to the good will of the sponsor.
THREATS
1) Another sponsorship entity can step into the vacuum and with it the loss of an opportunity for brand activation, establishment and transfer.
2) Inclement weather can delay the shooting of a pre-packaged event and lightning can delay the broadcast of a live event.

PROPOSED CGWP AWARDS DOCUMENT
The CGWP Awards Committee:
This committee is made up of the CGWP Chairperson, CGWP Vice Chairperson, 2 members of the CGWP committee, 1 member of CGA. The committee deliberates on the awards for all water polo activities in Central Gauteng Water Polo. The relevant Coaches, Chairpersons and Masters in Charge will present a nomination for consideration by the Awards Committee. The committee will call for nominations on an annual basis shortly before the CGA awards function. One of the important roles played by the committee is to endeavour to achieve recognition of water polo achievements across the range of water polo activities in the region of Central Gauteng.
General award stipulations:
· All players who play water polo in Central Gauteng are eligible for CGWP Awards.
· All players of any age are considered for CGWP Awards.
· CGWP does not make a re-award to a player at the same level.
· The conduct, behaviour, decorum, sportsmanship and disciplinary record of participants are factors which are taken into account by the Awards Committee when it meets to consider awards.
· Only players in ‘A’ teams can qualify for CGWP Awards.
· Players nominated must be in good standing with their school, club and Province.
· The CGWP Awards Committee reserves its right to make decisions using the award
criteria in this document as a firm guideline.
· The proposing member or nominated player could be asked to sit in on the discussion if clarity needs to be obtained about the nominees achievement
· All Awards except Certificates of Recognition are discussed by the CGWP Awards Committee.
Factors that determine the level of award:
· the success / achievements of the team during the season
· the fixture list and the calibre of the opposition
· the number of fixtures played
· the achievements of the individual within the team
· recognition by bodies other than CGWP
Awards offered by CGWP:
Certificate of Recognition - Certificate
Team Award - Medal
Half Colours - Tie
Full Colours - Plaque
Specific Honours - Honours Blazer
Special Award - As situation dictates
1 Certificate of Recognition
Candidate receives a Certificate of Recognition at his club or school:
1.1 First choice for a club A side or school A side.
1.2 Showed reasonable level of competence.
2 Team Award
Candidate receives a CGWP medal at a formal CGA awards function.
2.1 The player must play in a club A side or school A side.
2.2 Must show reasonable level of competency.
2.3 Must have been first choice competitor.
2.4 A minimum of five fixtures need to be played by the team.
3 Half Colours
Candidate receives a CGWP tie at a formal CGA awards function.
3.1 A player must be in the starting seven of a provincial side to receive this award.
3.2 For a player to receive Half Colours he needs to show above average ability and skills at the game, and commitment to the team. An appropriate level of competence has to have been achieved.
3.3 He must play at least 80% of the teams fixtures.
3.4 A player must show sportsmanship at all times and must conduct himself in the manner that is required of a 1st Team sportsman.
4 Full Colours
Candidate receives a CGWP plaque at a formal CGA awards function.
4.1 A player need not have received his Half Colours before being considered for Full Colours, but he must satisfy the criteria for Half Colours (above).
4.2 In addition, a player must be an outstanding player in the sport; factors such as selection to provincial / national sides would be taken into account but it is nevertheless the quality of the player’s performance for Central Gauteng Water Polo and his contribution to the CGWP team which remains the focus of consideration. The Full Colours Plaque recognises players of high quality.
4.3 A player must in a CGWP school or club team to receive this award.
5 Specific Honours
Candidate receives a CGWP blazer at a formal CGA awards function. A Specific Honours Award recognizes excellence. The candidate would have to have performed at a level which was clearly above that of a Full Colours Award. In most cases a recipient would have achieved recognition of his abilities outside of as well as inside the Central Gauteng Water Polo – for example by being selected for the SA Schools or National side. This is not, however, a prerequisite for this award when a proposal is considered by the Awards Committee. Candidates being considered for Specific Honours are also assessed on their merit worthiness – their example, their behaviour and conduct, their decorum, and their disciplinary record as members of CGWP. All Honours candidates are required to be registered CGWP members.
6 Special Awards
Candidates can be a person, group of persons, a sporting body or any other institution. The candidate must have made a significant contribution to the promotion and/or growth of sport of water polo. Persons who have showed extraordinary initiative or overcome severe adversity are considered. Each case is solely considered on its own merit without cross reference to other cases. Each award would suit the situation such as a gift to an administrator or kit for a deserving club.

GSWP 91 – Welcome back Mr. Brian Webster!
Dear All;
Please be advised that, because of nominations received, I have appointed Mr. Brian Webster as temporary Chairperson of GSWP until the AGM on 30 April 2009 at 16h00 at the St David’s High School Pavilion.
Mr. Ryan Weideman was also nominated to a much lesser extent but Mr. Webster is the obvious choice as he is not new to the position.
Mr. Webster will, as of today, assume all duties and responsibilities with the exception of payments which will be handed over if he is formally voted in at the AGM and has lodged a formally accepted constitution with the bank.
Please speak to him about trials, coaching appointments, tour accommodation, tour pool allocations and for that matter all issues related to GSWP.

GSWP 90 – GSWP Estimated Tour fee
Dear All;
The estimated Tour fee for Gauteng players have been determined at about R1500 per player.
There is still scope for a lot of sharpening of the proverbial pencil should the new Chairperson so wish and the estimation has been done at maximum amounts rather than minimum.

Dear All;
Please note that as of the new water polo season schools will be required to pay on 1 September of every year an annual affiliation fee into their provincial bodies of R500 per school.
Permission for said payment was obtained in 2008 through Gauteng Aquatics and was proposed through the Water Polo Board of control.
For some time the regions executive officers have been required to fund cellular calls, transport, travel, cost of internet, stationary etc. through their own personal funding, use of school office equipment or as a cost item on tour players accounts.
The aim is to stop this unsustainable and bad business practice and align with the how schools rugby and cricket administration is funded.
The funds will be freely available to the regional chairperson but he will have to account for the use of the funds at the annual AGM.

Please be advised that, as of end of March, I will no longer be able to continue my tenure as Chairperson of GSWP because I have taken up a position with a new school in Pretoria.

Please be advised that GSWP will be reorganized to incorporate more members to help tame the unruly beast. We are incorporating a number of new positions, the most prominent of which is a Vice Chairperson that will assimilate some of the current duties of the Chairperson.

Dear All;
We are aware that there are Gauteng Club Cup Games scheduled for the 15th of March which affects school going ladies which also plays for a club side.

* Late entries will be accepted on the day of the trial but is strongly discouraged as the length of the pool time allocated to each age group depends on the amount of entries received beforehand.
* The date of the SA Schools Inter Provincial Tournament in Jhb. is 12 – 16 December 2009.

* You are entitled to be observed for two periods of 10 minutes where you are in the water.
* Pre trials criteria with regards to fitness and ability will be supplied and posted in the trials blog space in due course.
* If you are selected to go though to the provincial training squad you will be expected to pay a fee of R120 per month which will cover your coach and managers cell expenses, travel and time spent.
* Please ensure that your coach provides you with a training programme that has the time, venue, date, and attending coach for at least 2 months in advance.
* If there is inclement weather that arrangement is that you arrive at the venue and wait for 30min before a practice is cancelled.
* Your provincial coach must do a minimum of four practices per month in the off season and eight practices per month in the pre and in season.(If not the team will be under prepared)

Dear All
Hungary is one of the oldest countries in Europe, older than France and Germany. While we are blessed with mineral wealth in South Africa – Hungary is blessed with thermal water over 80% of the country’s area – about 1500 thermal springs. This is why they are so adept at water sport especially water polo.
Day 1:
We depart from EL to JHB and from JHB to Budapest.
Day 2:
We arrive in Budapest. On arrival we meet our coach and check into our hotel. We use the public transport to get to Leanyfalu, a small town north of Budapest on the banks of the Danube, about 10 km from the Slovakian border. Here we play a practice match against the Konu club of Leanyfalu.
Day 3:
We leave for Leanyfalu again to watch league match. We also play a masters side. We also explore the Szentandrei area, a typical small Hungarian village.
Day 4:
Today we visit Margit island. This is the ‘Loftus’ of Hungarian water polo. It is an honor to play in that pool. After the game we visit an all you can eat restaurant over the bridge from Margit island. Here we experience Hungarian cuisine like goulash. Goulash is, contrary to popular belief, not a stew but an artistically prepared thick soup.
Day 5:
We leave for Kecskemet today at 8 am by train. On arrival we catch a bus to the pool. The club we trained with is ‘Shining Seals’ polo club. We spend time at the local mall until our next training session. Back at the pool we visit thermal spring .
Day 6:
Today we visit Lake Balaton where we play beach polo – a four man version of the game. Like sevens rugby is to 15 man rugby. We spend the next two nights here.
Day 7:
Lake Balaton – sightseeing and cycling in the forests around the Lake.
Day8:
Lake Balaton and return to Budapest. Upon return to Budapest, a visit to the Chinese market.
Day 9:
A visit to the BVSC club in north Budapest. BVSC is a club with a lot of history and is famous for the number of Hungarian water polo players it has produced.
Day 10:
Another visit to Leanyfalu to play water polo and train with the KONE club.
Day 11:
Today we go to Eger, a three hour bus drive from Budapest. This small town is renowned for its sporting history, we visit the Sports Museum which chronicles the history of the modern Olympics and the achievements of people from the town. After the Museum we go to the old Eger pool which has a cobble stone bottom and is fed directly from a thermal spring, where we play an Eger boys club. The pool complex is still exactly like it was when it was built in 1925. Playing in this pool is like taking a step back in history as the pool, goals, change rooms and stands are the same as in the photographs from 1925! Playing time is strictly controlled – as soon as one practice finishes, the next group dives in exactly on the hour! After this game we visit the new Eger pool, which is an indoor pool and has an impressive large wooden roof, much like the inverted hull of an old wooden sailing ship. We spend the night in Eger.
Day 12:
Today we practice polo again and visit the historical fort of Eger, as well as tour the interesting dolomite caverns and rural area of Eger.
Day 13:
Today we return to Budapest and the remainder of the day is a shopping day and we also do some sightseeing.
Day 14:
Today we leave from Budapest to Johannesburg .
COST OF TOUR: R20 000 all inclusive
(all meals, flights from Johannesburg, accommodation, public transport in Hungary, pool entry, coaching fees, bus hire) Please note air fare from your city to Johannesburg and return is not included in tour cost. Visa costs are for own cost but if applied for as a group is normally free as the tour qualifies as a cultural/sport tour. Accommodation will be in student residences and youth hostels.
Itinerary may change slightly and is based on activities from 2008 tour with slight improvements.

Dear All

Please forward this letter to any person that might be interested.
Gauteng Schools Water Polo would like submissions from interested persons who would like to coach or manage provincial teams in preparation for the 2009 SA Schools Water Polo Inter Provincial Tournament in Johannesburg in the second week of December 2009.
Managers would not necessarily need previous water polo experience but teachers, parents of players or ex players and Black, Coloured, Indian or Chinese applicants would receive preference. Good administrative and communication skills are a must for managers. Coaches would be selected by a coaching appointment panel on the basis of recent achievement, qualification and years of water polo experience.
Coaches get paid a coaching fee of between R2000 – R3500 depending on their grading.
Managers are appointed in an honorary position and receive free kit.
Coaches and managers will be expected to be involved with their team from March 2009.
